Product Description
Revolution for Cats, a popular topical parasite prevention medication.
Product Overview
Revolution (active ingredient: selamectin) is a topical "spot-on" parasiticide for cats. It is manufactured by Zoetis and requires a prescription from a veterinarian . It is designed to be applied once a month to the skin to protect against multiple internal and external parasites .
What Parasites Does It Treat?
Revolution is a broad-spectrum product that protects against the following parasites :
Important Note: The standard Revolution for Cats is not effective against ticks. For tick protection, a different product like Revolution Plus (which contains an additional ingredient) would be necessary .
Dosage by Weight
Revolution comes in different color-coded packages based on the cat's weight . The standard dose is 6 mg of selamectin per kg (2.7 mg/lb) of body weight .
| Cat Weight | Package Color | Selamectin per Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 lbs (2.3 kg) | Mauve / Pink | 15 mg |
| 5.1–15 lbs (2.3–6.8 kg) | Blue | 45 mg |
| 15.1–22 lbs (6.8–10 kg) | Taupe | 60 mg |
For cats over 22 lbs, the appropriate combination of tubes should be used .
How to Apply
-
Remove from packaging: Hold the tube upright and press the cap down firmly until it clicks to puncture the seal .
-
Part the fur: Part your cat's fur at the base of the neck, in front of the shoulder blades, until the skin is visible. This location prevents your cat from licking the medication .
-
Apply directly to skin: Place the tip of the tube on the skin and squeeze the tube 3 or 4 times to empty its entire contents directly onto the skin in one spot .
-
Discard: While keeping the tube squeezed, drag it away from the liquid and lift to remove. Check the tube to ensure it is empty and discard it in your household trash .
Key Safety & Administration Tips
-
Breeding & Pregnant Cats: Approved for use in breeding, pregnant, and lactating queens .
-
Before Application: Ensure the skin is dry. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin .
-
After Application: Do not bathe your cat or allow it to get wet for at least 2 hours after treatment to allow the medication to absorb . It is water-fast after 2 hours .
-
Avoid Contact: Avoid touching the application site until it is dry. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after application .
-
Flammable: The product is flammable until dry. Keep away from heat, sparks, or open flames .
Possible Side Effects
Revolution is generally well-tolerated, but side effects can occur, though they are rare . The most common side effects are temporary and mild .
-
Temporary hair loss (alopecia) at the application site (in about 1% of cats) .
-
Temporary clumping of hair, hair discoloration, or a slight powdery residue at the treatment site .
-
Digestive upset such as vomiting, loose stool, diarrhea, or drooling (especially if the cat licks the area while it is wet) .
-
Systemic signs like lethargy, anorexia, or increased salivation (in less than 0.5% of cats) .
-
Neurological signs such as muscle tremors or incoordination (in very rare cases) .
Note: If you notice any unusual symptoms or if side effects persist, contact your veterinarian immediately . If a cat licks the application site and starts drooling, this is often a reaction to the bitter taste and is usually not a toxicity concern. Offering some milk or tuna juice can help resolve the symptoms quickly .
If You Miss a Dose
If you forget to apply a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. Then, resume a new monthly schedule from that date. Do not apply a double dose .
